Friday Fun - Star Guard
Posted 6/04/2010 9:00 am by Crazy Vincent
It's the first Friday of June, and you know what that means. This week is a cool downloadable game called Star Guard. It is reminiscent of classic games, featuring a limited color palette and simple graphics. However, like most retro-inspired games I feature, it has some great gameplay and a neat story. I particularly like the inline story telling method that lets you read or ignore as much of it as you like. The levels do get somewhat challenging but the frequent checkpoints and infinite lives help keep the frustration to a minimum. This is a really cool hybrid of new and old styles of game design.

Friday Fun - Sushi Cat

Sushi Cat is hungry!! Drop the squishy guy onto the board to help him eat sushi. It's a simple game, inspired by Pachinko, but it's easy to get sucked in trying to complete all the boards. Bon appetit!
Friday Fun - Portal (for free!)

Yeah, I know I posted a downloadable game last week. And I've even featured this game before. But now, Valve has been nice enough to release Portal for free until May 24. So now you have no excuse! Hell, they even created a Mac version just so they could release that for free too!Go get Portal and play it! It is one of the best games in existence, really; a masterful combination of gameplay and storytelling. It's a landmark game, inspiring recreations and influencing other titles. It's almost impossible to find any complaints about this game, except maybe that it's too short.Seriously, this game is worth the meager $20 that it normally goes for. But if you're too lazy to go and get it FOR FREE, well, sorry, but you can't be my friend anymore.
Friday Fun - Call of Duty 6 (2D Remake)

Welcome to May's first Friday, which means a new downloadable game today. This month we're featuring Call of Duty 6 (2D Remake) whose name pretty much speaks for itself. I suppose it would more accurately be called a demake, a few of which we have featured in the past. In case you didn't click any of those links: a demake is when someone takes an existing game and recreates it as though it were built for an older system. This one is debatable because despite its simple 2D appearance, the complexity is probably more than any old systems could have handled. Regardless, it's a fun diversion for a while, even if (speaking from experience) you have never played the real Call of Duty 6.
Friday Fun - Super Mario Crossover

Bush sent along this awesome game called Super Mario Crossover. It's a retro mashup of all your favorite game characters crammed into the world of Super Mario. I think every game would be better if you played as the dude from Contra!
